I have always been interested in superstitions. In England we have many of them. Some come from ( 1 ) sources and others have their ( 2 ) in folk lore. It is thought to be ( 3 ), for example, to walk under a ladder or to spill salt. You will also find that if an Englishman says something like,“I haven't had a cold this year," he may add, "Touch wood." An American, by the way, would say,“Knock on wood."
The idea behind this last superstition is that if you say something like, I haven't had a cold this year," you are tempting ( 4 ) and inviting a cold. The reason why saying “touch wood" is thought to ward off any future bad luck in these circumstances is an interesting one.
I think that not walking under a ladder is just a matter of ( 5 ) sense, inasmuch as it is a means of avoiding having things dropped on one's head. But the reason that spilling salt is considered to be unlucky goes back, like touching wood, to the Middle Ages. In those days salt was extremely ( 6 ) and was therefore a very valuable ( 7 ). Other expressions in English attest to how ( 6 ) salt used to be. We sometimes say, for instance, that a man is “not worth his salt," meaning in modern English that a man is not worth the money he is paid to do a ( 8 ). This saying comes from the days when a workman lived with his employer and received his food, including salt, as part or full payment for his labour.
